Bent keel in racing pigeons is not a disease  , it happen when there is a shortage of Vitamin B1
( THIAMINE ) because of disease.

Viruses or bacteria lives on your water soluble vitamins. ( Vitamin B Complex , B1  , B2 , B6 , B12, B15 ,  and Vitamin C )
Your pigeon now have a shortage of the water soluble vitamins because of the disease and secondary infections is the main culprit now.

Because of VITAMIN B1 ( thiamine) shortage your pigeon get fatigue and memory loss .
VITAMIN B1 ( thiamine) aids with the digestion of carbohydrates  


Because of VITAMIN B2 ( riboflavin ) shortage your pigeon have poor digestion and blurred vision .

Racing Pigeon Diseases and Ailments .

When a pigeon become sick or the loft performance is poor we always grab for the bottle.Sometime we give the right medication , most other times we guess because we don't know which medicine to give for what disease, or for how long and when to follow up the treatment .
Firstly we find out what is wrong before we grab for the bottle , then we can commence with the treatment .

PARATYPOID  AND SELMONELLA
Paratypoid have 3 forms
1) intestinal form
2) Nerve form
3) joint form
If a pigeon got Paratyphoid it can be cured , but some birds never got sick and is carriers of the disease .
did you know most birds are carriers of this disease and so is rats and mice . Paratyphoid can be transmitted through water, food , droppings and urine .
You can inoculate all the birds before the Racing Season and even in the Racing Season. The best is to do the treatment and then inoculate your birds . ( I USE autogenous bacterin--aluminium hydroxide )

PARATYPOID  AND SELMONELLA symptoms we can see on pigeons and loft
1) INTESTINAL FORM. Lots of watery droppings
2) NERVE FORM. Balance loss and neck turning
3) JOINT FORM. Hang wing and limping leg
4) Pigeon droppings sticking to tail feathers is the first symptom i check for when handling a pigeon.
5) From a race they will come two or three together with a good following up but 10 to 15 min late on result  
    sheet and loosing birds every week
6) Breeding birds leave the nest for no reason
7) Breeding birds leave the eggs when the eggs start to hatch.
8) Babies die in the nest at age of 5 to 7 days for no reason.
9) Bent keel on youngsters . BENT KEEL CAN BE FIXED BEFORE THE AGE OF 26 DAYS WITH B1 ( THIAMINE) AT LEAST 5 mg  PER PIGEON FOR 3 TO 5 DAYS.
10) Eggs.... dead in shell .
11) Stock Cocks not fertile at early age ( inoculate with autogenous bacterin--aluminium hydroxide )
12) Stock Hens that that stopped laying eggs ( inoculate with autogenous bacterin--aluminium hydroxide )

PARATYPOID  AND SELMONELLA treatment
1) Assume the whole loft have the disease and treat them immediately for 4 days.I use a 4 in 1 mix .
2) The first treatment must be at least 3 weeks before your first race.
3) Follow up treatment must then be once a month for two days .The treatment must be trough out the racing season. REMEMBER TAKE OUT ALL GRIT AND BLACK MINERALS DURING TREATMENT.

WITH AN OUTBREAK  OF PARATYPOID  AND SELMONELLA
1) B COMPLEX  supplement , SODIUM ( I PUT LICORICE SWEETS STRIPS  IN HOT WATER TO DISSOLVE). WITH EXTRA VIT B1 ( THIAMINE) AT LEAST 5 mg  PER PIGEON.
2) Inoculate all the birds with autogenous bacterin (aluminium hydroxide ) made in California

Tricomoniase
This is a one celled organism , living of the water solube vitamins ( b and c ) of your pigeon. 
It is mostly passed over from parents to their young
If the pigeon contracted the disease he  will not  have it forever , it can be cured. 
Pigeons can get cancer many times  in their life time
PEOPLE CAN BE CARRIERS OF TRICOMONADS AND YOU CAN SPREAD THIS THROUGH YOUR LOFT. SOME PIGEON FANCIERS LICK THE LITTLE BABIES FEET TO RUNG IT. THIS IS HOW THE CONTRACT THE DISEASE  AND SPREAD IT THROUGH THE LOFT..... EASY TO SEE THE FANCIER STARTS TO LOOSE HIS TEETH...

Tricomonad or Canker symptoms we can see on pigeons and loft
1) The pigeons feathers is becoming dry .
2) Pigeons became  heavy ( feel heavy in the hand ) .
3) Pigeons get lost from races . Young birds die easily .
4) After feeding the pigeons look if they suffer to swallow and push their tails to the ground and standing in a penguin posture 
5) From a race they will come one - one , a few minutes apart with a bad following up .

Tricomonad or Canker treatment
1) THE SAME MEDICINE FOR THE FANCIER AND THE PIGEON............Lots on the marked today mostly Metronidazole and flagyl  is the cheapest.   
2) It take 1 TO 3 days to get cured from tricomonads.. The treatment must be followed up with Antibiotics ,
because there is a raw sore now in the pigeons crop. 3) No follow up treatment needed. But if they give water on the pigeon truck your birds can pick it up and spread it through your race loft.
4) B complex supplement help. And probiotic of yogurt after the  Antibiotics
5) To make 100% sure you can test the pigeons blood under a microscope .Get your self tested
6) My own favorites is to give cayenne pepper ( capsicum ) monday and theusday in the water (1 gram per liter water) with Colliodal Silver (10% to 30%). Colloidal silver kill 652 one celled organisms ,and since I started using these 95% of all my pigeon diseases and problams have disappeared .

Malaria
Malaria destroy the red blood cells of the pigeon.
It is mostly carried by mosquito and pigeon fly. ( by dipping t can be prevented )
If the pigeon contracted the disease he will have it forever

Malaria symptoms we can see on pigeons and loft
1) Lots of dandruff next to the keel bone
2) Pigeons became  anemic ( white in beak and not normal pink)
3) Pigeons fly low around the loft
4) Pigeons will fly low on liberation and take longer to find their way
5) From a race they will come two or three together with a good following up but 10 to 15 min late on result

Malaria treatment
1) Assume the whole loft have the disease ant treat them immediately for 10 days ( the medication you put with your normal program and it don't affect the vitamins and stuff you give.)
2) It take 52 days ( 7 and a half weeks ) for the red blood cells to get back to normal. The first treatment must be 8 weeks before your first race.
3) Follow up treatment must then be once a week for one day or two days every two weeks.The treatment must be trough out the racing season.
4) Iron supplement use helr the red blood cell count to rise.
5) To make 100% sure you can test the pigeons blood under a microscope.See the book of the Flying Vet.
